What makes one person revere High Renaissance art but dislike the work of the Impressionists is as much a mystery as what actually makes someone an artist in the first place. Great art is not merely a matter of brilliant technique, wonderful composition or ground-braking theory – plenty of artists have had one or more of these attributes but not been judged “great”. What makes great art is something that moves the inner spirit and fires the imagination of the observer, something that manages, for example, to transcend the simple application of paint to canvas – that many of the artists shown in these pages achieve.
One of the greatest difficulties in art appreciation lies in trying to perceive a painting with the eyes of a contemporary: In trying to understand just how revolutionary was the way that Cézanne applied his paint, how assaulting was the use of Matisse’s color, or just how different was the vision of the Impressionists. These days we are so used to the different approach of their paintings, that it is hard to see what all the fuss was about. But in their time many of our most treasured artists were dismissed as frauds and impostors: even an artist like Turner was vilified for his work.
A major factor, therefore, in who was able to become an artist was patronage - being able to earn sufficient money to be able to practice the art of painting. From the early years the two main sources of patronage were rulers, in particular princes and monarchs, and the church. It is unsurprising that many of the paintings that have survived the passage and ravages of time from before the fifteenth century are of a religious nature: the church was involved so much in daily life and was so wealthy that it could commission artists such as Michelangelo to portray Christian iconography. Royalty and nobility, too, were wealthy enough to be able to be patrons – and often sufficiently egocentric to want to perpetuate their image and that of their friends and family for the generations to come. In portraiture they could be remembered as better looking (mostly) than in life, and eternally youthful, and vigorous. In a time before photography, even marriage contracts could be based on a suitable painted image! Sadly, it is undoubtedly true that many of the greatest fine artists were unappreciated in their lifetime, could not find patrons, and died in poverty – men such as Vincent van Gogh and Amedeo Modigliani.
Such fanatics down the centuries have been responsible for destroying many great works of art which did not meet with their approval. To begin with the intolerance was mainly religious, but later, particularly in nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, politics became the all-important factor. Totalitarian regimes intent on ruling every aspect of society considered artists to be dangerous insurgents and did everything within their power to stop them. Hitler and the Nazi Party, for example, persecuted the German Expressionist painters for producing “degenerate art”, and Stalin in Russia similarly eliminated all but Party art.
This political reaction is all-encompassing and memorable but, thankfully, less typical then the overt reaction to new styles and movements shown by both the public and the art establishment. This reaction can be every bit as destructive as the fanatic. The public, in general, is conservative in artistic appreciation, and this was particularly true in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, when it could take some years for a new artistic style to be appreciated – by which time it was often too late to help the artist concerned. Those artists lauded with honors and money within their own lifetime often disappear into obscurity, while their derided contemporaries emerge to be appreciated as great artists.
Most of the history of art until the mid-nineteenth century follows a broadly linear development. A new technique or approach is developed by one particular artist or school of artists, the style is then examined by other artists and the public and is either accepted or not as the case may be. There is room for both fashion and faddism, but, in general, the development is linear. From about the 1850s, however, the spirit of revolution that had been so apparent in Western society from the American Revolution onward seemed to affect the art world. In Britain the unique talents of Blake and then Turner appeared, a little-later the Pre-Raphaelites began their work, then came the Symbolists, The Impressionists, and suddenly it seems, a mounting number of art movements arose, that would influence and change the vary nature of painting – surrealism, cubism, expressionism.
